The Best Laid Plans of Mice and (Wo)men

Blogging helps clear my head and focus on what is important in my life here.

As we stop at the light downtown, people pass by, placing notecards about their story or a pack of mints, gum or flowers for you to by. As the light changes, they are scurrying back to collect their supplies. People wave in front of our faces (plastic eagles, fuzzy teddy bears, water bottles-now you KNOW I am not interested in them!) to entice us. The children get sucked-in. They see the ice cream vendors with their metal boxes strapped behind the bicycle seat.

Brought worn and saggy underwear, stained t-shirts and toss away shorts to use on the farm. I did pack a few things to wear “out” and discovered no one seems to care what the American wears, if I am polished and trendy or not. When the maid asked for my clothes to wash, I was too embarrassed to turn them over to her. I will wash them at the farm.

Eating breakfast-strong coffee with milk and looks like the brown organic crystallized sugar from Carribou, drinking yogurt that comes in a plastic bottle like the half-n-half containers at home with some fruit I don’t know the name of, it is similar to a small mango or fig.

The kids are watching Woody Woodpecker cartoons, eating apples, chocolate cookies and drinking water. Riveted to the tv-same as other children around the world.

Turns out I am heading out tomorrow for the farm. Everything gets confusing here, plans change and everyone accepts it as thus. I have the chance to be with my friends one more night. Fantastic!
