In the dead of the night two fireflies swirled around the
room. I laid and watched them dip and soar in circles as I struggled with pain
in my foot. Didn’t dare turn on the light but scrounged around until I found my
Arnica cream to apply to the top and bottom of my bulbous foot.
Jo and Jorge arrived bringing slabs of beef, linguisa and
sausages to make a chorrosco (bbq.) Jorge slung loads of sea salt over the top
of everything and stuck it in the oven to keep away the flies. Said it would
take about an hour to absorb the salt. In the meantime, Jo threw a pot of water
on the stove to boil and cut up a hard salami to eat…not much for the
vegetarian to eat so I sampled a slice of each once it w as cooked. Manioc
cubes were taken out of the freezer to boil then salt sprinkled over the top!
The rest of the crew got to drink beer which looks pretty satisfying when I
can’t have any (on antibiotics.) Drat.
We had strong sweet coffee and flat cookies that look like
crackers. I shared the last of my pomegranate hard candies in the late
afternoon.
It’s now 7:35pm and I am wondering about dinner…yes, I am
always wondering about dinner. By the time I am ready to kill the bugs and eat
them, we sit down for something light.
Watched a few futebol games on the tube, I snuck in a bit of
CNN to see what is happening on the campaign trail. Frightening events, between
that 48% split and Sandy!

Pretty full day of talking over options for the farm. Wish I
could add my business expertise since they are discussing additional equipment
to invest in for the farm. I did ask the question, why do you want to increase
the chicken business, is it to fiscally improve the farm or do they believe it
is the next best thing to do. As with many businesses, it is hard to wear all
hats and Dario has everything on his shoulders. If they could find some good
people to train…I also recommended they look into auctions to purchase the
equipment at a lower price. Also suggested they find another chicken farmer and
ask them about the ins and outs of the business. I don’t know if they want my
input but I do have some experience with expansions and new business ventures.
I would love to write a business plan for them and create an annual budget if
they are interested.
Got to speak with my friend Denise in Florianopolis and we hope to get cracking on
plans for me to visit them soon!
Set a date to talk with Taelor via Skype so I am very
excited to hear about the Cabaret and her life.
Big hug all around,
Paula
